EuroRiver CleanUp

The big day of action: Saturday, 12 September 2026.

Rotary x Rotaract x End Plastic Soup x RhineCleanUp

Together for a plastic-free world

Rotary, Rotaract, End Plastic Soup and RhineCleanUp are now joining forces – together we want to rid our country of plastic waste.

All German and European Rotary and Rotaract clubs are called upon to participate in our big day of action on Saturday, 12 September 2026, with clean-ups.

Founded in 2018, EndPlasticSoup is a global Rotary initiative dedicated to combating plastic pollution in various areas of the environment. Spokesperson Marja Ritterfeld explains: "The goal is for the world to be plastic-free by 2050."

How can you participate as a Rotary or Rotaract club?

  1. Select the menu item "JOIN IN". Here you can register your clean-up.

  2. Your clean-up should have a name that we can identify as a Rotary or Rotaract group.

    • The country code should always be at the beginning: D for Germany, NL for the Netherlands, H for Hungary, GB for Great Britain, etc.

    • Then enter the name of the river where the clean-up will take place: Rhine, Meuse, Danube, Thames, etc.

    • The name should also include the name of the organising group: Rotary Düsseldorf, Rotaract Maastricht, Rotary Budapest or Rotaract London.

    • The name will then look like this, for example:

      D    Rhine Rotary Düsseldorf or

      NL Meuse Rotaract Maastricht or

      H    Danube Rotary Budapest or

      GB Thamse Rotaract London

  3. In addition to the group name, you must also provide an email address where you can be contacted.

  4. After entering this information, you will be taken to the registration form, which you should fill out with your specific details.

  5. Once you have completed the registration, you will receive a confirmation email via which you must verify your campaign. It also contains further important information on how to obtain your promotional and collection materials.

  6. The registration tile link can be sent to interested parties so that individuals can register for each local/regional event. This gives each local/regional organiser an overview of how many participants they can and should expect.

  7. Now all we need is good weather and good spirits.

  8. We would love to see photos and videos of your CleanUp, which you are welcome to send to us with a few details at socialmedia@rhinecleanup.org.

  9. Please let your participants know that the organiser, RhineCleanUp, is a non-profit organisation that relies solely on private funding and donations. You can also find the donation button on the EuroRiver CleanUp page.

  10. As an individual Rotary or Rotaract member, you can also register for existing CleanUps if you do not want to organise one yourself. If there is no existing CleanUp, you will unfortunately not be able to register. Or you can register your own group, see points 1-6 😁

The pollution of the oceans must be stopped.

By 2050, the mass of plastic waste in the world's oceans will exceed that of fish stocks. According to current estimates, approximately 10 million tonnes are added each year, with reputable researchers even suggesting a figure of 13 million tonnes. This is a serious problem that will have harmful effects on both marine life and humans.

We focus on rivers, because 70 per cent of plastic waste enters the oceans via rivers. Here in Europe, too, the problem is alarming.

We are taking action! Since 2018, we have been cleaning up riverbanks – initially along the Rhine from its source to its mouth, and now along 29 other rivers as well. In recent years, we have mobilised over 100,000 volunteers, who have collected over 1,000 tonnes of waste from various rivers.

This is what we stand for

We are an open organisation. Local groups from environmental associations, clubs, companies, social institutions, religious communities, political parties, circles of friends and neighbourhood communities, families and individuals are involved in our work. This unprejudiced cooperation is our strength.

We are all united by the desire to preserve and protect nature and the environment. That is why we are active in clearing rubbish from riverbanks. We also support prevention and education measures that help to avoid litter.

Our community stands for civic engagement that is supported by all forces in society that are committed to social coexistence. No one is excluded on the basis of their origin, skin colour, religion, sexual orientation or physical and/or mental disabilities. We promote social coexistence and, as a meeting place, make an important contribution to integration.

All people who share these human rights-oriented and democratic values are welcome to participate in our activities.

Working together for a greener future: Deutsche Postcode Lottery is actively committed to our environment as a main partner.

The mission of the social lottery is to create a better world for us humans and to preserve our planet. The RhineCleanUp not only strengthens social togetherness, but also triggers a rethinking of environmental pollution and its associated consequences. After our employees have already actively supported the big "Rhine CleanUp" in 2018, 2019 and 2020, with the help of our participants we are again financially supporting the project from source to mouth this year. In addition to measures to promote the campaign, work equipment such as trash bags, high-visibility vests, gloves and grabs will be provided for the many thousands of helpers to clean up Germany's second-largest river and its tributaries. And the best thing about it is that anyone can join in and make their contribution to a clean environment.
